I don’t talk about nutrition basics as much as I probably should. It’s not because I don’t understand the science—it’s because I’m trying to understand something bigger first: how society actually functions and how to meet people where they truly are. Often, the simplest fundamentals are the ones that get lost in the noise.
The truth is, there’s a lot of good information out there about nutrition. However, there’s even more bad information, and that’s where the problem begins.
The Problem With Modern Nutrition Trends
Most people aren’t confused because nutrition is complicated. They’re confused because they’ve been told too many conflicting things for too long. Everywhere you look, there’s a new diet, a new restriction, or a new “perfect” way to eat.
When someone starts working with me, there’s usually a moment where they stop and say: “Wait… you mean everything I was told isn’t true?”
Why You Don’t Need Advanced Nutrition Science
I have a very high level of nutrition knowledge. I’ve spent years studying, applying, and refining it—both as a coach and as a competitive bodybuilder. I could easily go deep into:
- Cellular function and ATP production
- Metabolic flexibility
- Mitochondrial efficiency
- Advanced nutrient timing
But here’s the reality: I almost never need to. Most people haven’t mastered the basics yet. It’s like trying to teach Chapter 20 of a textbook when someone is still stuck on Chapter 2. Mastering the Practical Nutrition Basics
The biggest improvements in nutrition don’t come from advanced strategies; they come from doing the simple things consistently. That’s where almost all progress starts, and for most people, that’s where the majority of progress stays—because it works.
Key fundamentals include:
- Organized Meals: Transitioning from random, inconsistent grazing to a structured schedule.
- Macro Balance: Ensuring a proper mix of protein, carbohydrates, and fats.
- Fiber Intake: Prioritizing digestion and satiety through whole foods.
- Sugar Reduction: Identifying and reducing excessive, empty calories.
The Most Underrated Factor: Chronic Dehydration
If I had to point to one thing that is consistently overlooked, it’s hydration. I would confidently say that the vast majority of people are under-hydrated—easily over 90% of the population. According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, maintaining adequate fluid intake is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to support chronic health.
Hydration directly impacts:
- Energy levels and mental clarity
- Digestion and nutrient absorption
- Physical performance and recovery
Small Changes, Big Impact
One of the most fascinating things about nutrition is how minor adjustments can create massive results. Even at my level, I still experience this. Something as simple as switching to better-quality food sources, preparing meals differently, or increasing water intake can lead to noticeable improvements in energy, focus, and overall well-being. It doesn’t take a complete overhaul; it takes awareness and intention.
Why Most People Struggle
It’s not that people don’t care. It’s that they’ve been overwhelmed and misled. They are chasing extremes when they should be focusing on consistency. They are looking for “perfect” when they actually need “practical.” In that frantic search for the “secret” to health, they miss the fundamentals that actually change lives.
A Better Approach to Wellness
Nutrition basics are the foundation of everything. How you eat affects how you feel, how you move, how you recover, and ultimately, how you live. Yet, these fundamentals are often pushed aside or overcomplicated to the point where people give up on their health goals entirely.
My goal is simple: to get as many people as possible back to what actually works. This means moving away from extremes, confusion, and passing trends, and returning to a clear, individualized, and practical approach to nutrition basics. Because when you strip everything else away, it really is that simple—and when you finally get the fundamentals right, it changes everything.
