If you had asked me this question 10 years ago, my answer would have been simple: In-person training.
But after years of experience, thousands of clients, and being forced to adapt, my answer has changed. Today, I believe both in-person and online programming can be equally effective. They each have advantages. They each have limitations. Just like anything else in health and fitness, it comes down to the individual, the situation, and the quality of the program.
How Online Training Changed My Perspective
When COVID-19 happened, I was forced to transition into online coaching because I couldn’t train everyone one-on-one the way I had before. At first, it was simply a necessity. But something unexpected happened, highlighting the unique nuances of in-person vs. online fitness training that I had never fully considered. I started noticing things about movement that I hadn’t noticed before.
Being limited to a camera forced me to analyze angles differently. I had to pay closer attention to lighting, positioning, movement patterns, and small details I may have overlooked in person. It reminded me of something interesting about the human body: When one sense becomes limited, others become enhanced. Someone who loses their vision often develops a heightened sense of hearing. The brain adapts.
The same thing happened with online coaching. Because I couldn’t rely on the same in-person cues, I developed a different level of observation. And honestly, it made me a better coach.
The Benefits of Online Programming
One of the biggest advantages of online training is the complete system surrounding it.
- You have your structured exercise program.
- You have videos demonstrating movements.
- You have performance tracking.
- You have nutrition guidance.
- You have seamless communication.
You can also ask questions in an environment where many people feel more comfortable. Health is personal. A lot of people struggle to open up about their bodies, insecurities, struggles, and goals. Sometimes being behind a screen removes some of that intimidation. It allows people to have conversations they might be uncomfortable having face-to-face.
Technology has completely changed the way we live. People use smartwatches, track their daily steps, monitor heart rates, and communicate through their phones every day. Online health coaching fits naturally into the reality of today’s digital world.
The Benefits of In-Person Training
That being said, there are things about in-person training that technology cannot completely replace. Human connection matters. There is an undeniable energy you feel when working with someone face-to-face.
- You can sense when someone walks in having a stressful day.
- You can recognize subtle changes in body language.
- You can see real-time emotional responses.
You can sometimes pick up on things that are difficult to capture through a screen. There are also certain movement assessments where being physically present provides immediate, tactile information.
The question is: Does that make in-person training better? Not necessarily. It just makes it different.
The Best Approach May Be Both
I do not believe there is one universal answer. In-person coaching allows some individuals to thrive, while others prefer the flexibility and independence of online training. Many people ultimately benefit most by utilizing a hybrid of both approaches.
The most important factor isn’t whether the training happens in a physical gym or through a fitness app. The most important factor is whether the program is individualized, whether the coach truly understands the person, and whether the client can consistently follow through.
A great coach can create incredible results in person. A great coach can create incredible results online. A poor program is still a poor program, regardless of the format.
The Future of Fitness Coaching
The future isn’t about picking a definitive side in the debate of in-person vs. online fitness training or choosing one format over the other. It’s about understanding how to leverage both effectively. Technology has given us tools we never had before. Human connection has given us something technology will never replace.
The best approach is finding what works for your lifestyle. Because at the end of the day, the best program is the one that helps you become healthier, stronger, and more capable for the rest of your life.
