Embracing Change: My Journey Through Fitness, Wellness, and Life

In this fitness and wellness journey, Ryan reflects on transitioning from high-intensity bodybuilding to a more adaptive, smarter approach to health. Discover why intensity isn't the ultimate metric for longevity and how to embrace change by listening to your body’s unique needs. From heart rate variability to the power of simplicity, learn how to redefine health through happiness, peace, and sustainable progress.

If I could go back 10 or 15 years and talk to my younger self—the Ryan who was always the hardest worker in the room—I would probably laugh at the idea that this is the article I’d write today. Am I getting older and weaker? Arguably so. But with age comes wisdom, and along the way, I’ve embraced hard transitions that have made me more diverse, well-rounded, and ultimately better.

A Foundation in Sports and Bodybuilding

My fitness and wellness journey started with sports; baseball and football defined my childhood. Then came bodybuilding, which shaped an identity and discipline I’d never forget. After that chapter, I pursued gymnastics, something I had always wanted to do but feared. Starting from scratch and working my way up was one of the most transformative experiences of my life.

The Intricacy of the Human Machine

Through these transitions, I’ve created something unique: a wellness and fitness approach that’s truly my own. It blends lessons from my studies, life experiences, and personal discoveries. What most people don’t understand is that intensity—the idea that harder always equals better—is not the ultimate metric in health and fitness.

As a kid, I believed lifting more weight, running farther, and eating less would automatically make me healthier. But the body is far more complex than that. It’s an incredibly unique machine with systems that are both intricate and adaptable. Understanding this complexity—and embracing simplicity—has been a game-changer.

Shifting from Intensity to Adaptability

The turning point came when I realized that intensity wasn’t the answer. I remember benching 500 pounds at 30 and thinking, “I won’t be benching 10,000 pounds at 80. What comes next?” I shifted to lighter weights and more varied training, only to encounter new metabolic challenges. That’s when I truly began to understand the importance of adapting workouts to life’s daily stresses and personal capabilities, rather than chasing extreme feats.

A good friend of mine, Joel, developed an innovative app that tracks heart rate variability, highlighting the truth that not every day is meant for intense workouts.

Defining Health Through Happiness and Peace

Extreme exercise may be exciting, but it does not guarantee longevity. If your goal is wellness, happiness, and long-term health, the approach must be smarter, not harder. I’ve come to define health by one word: happiness. And evolving in life means embracing change. Survival—or thriving—is not about being the strongest or smartest; it’s about adaptability. At 70, you won’t be running 100 miles or bench pressing massive weights—but other challenges can enrich your life without unnecessary strain.

A Celebration of Vitality

Competitiveness, in fitness or life, is often overrated. Comparing yourself to others—or even to your past self in extreme ways—can be counterproductive. On a true fitness and wellness journey, growth comes from small, consistent improvements and celebrating what your body can do. Exercise is not a punishment; it’s a celebration of energy, vitality, and life. I’ve learned that feeling good every day is far more important than pushing to exhaustion for one hour. A warm cup of tea, a grapefruit, an energizing workout—these are the moments that sustain wellness.

Embracing the Personal Journey

Life doesn’t have to be a competition, and maturity has taught me that peace and progress matter more than proving anything to anyone. In the end, health is personal, adaptive, and deeply rewarding. It’s about feeling better than yesterday, discovering your capabilities, and embracing the journey ahead—wherever it leads.
